Middleton Lakes RSPB Reserve - 13th May 2023

Barn Owl (J Wharton) Middleton Lakes RSPB Reserve 13th May 2023 Weather: Cloudy and cool in the morning, sunny and warm in the afternoon. Members and friends: 29 Driver: Glenn Twenty-nine members and friends set off from Stockport for our May trip, not to the expected destination of Anglesey but instead, to Middleton Lakes RSPB reserve in the midlands. This was due to a closure over the weekend of the M56 whilst a new bridge was slid into position. Attempting to circumnavigate the closure would have only resulted in the coach being stuck in traffic for prolonged periods. A comfort stop at Norton Canes services allowed Glenn to acquire the free coach pass for the toll road and society members to stock up on provisions for the day ahead. The very large reserve has limited facilities so refreshment planning was crucial. Frampton Marsh RSPB Reserve - 9th September 2023

Spoonbill, Geese, Duck (J Wharton) Frampton Marsh RSPB Reserve 9 th September 2023 Weather : Sunny and very hot Members and friends : 33 Driver : Glenn Thirty-three members and friends turned up for the societies trip to Frampton Marsh RSPB reserve. We left Stockport at the usual time and headed over to Lincolnshire via the A628 Woodhead Pass. As we passed through the Longdendale Valley flocks of Swallow, Woodpigeon and Jackdaw were moving through. The occasional Buzzard was spotted. We managed to see a handful of Red Grouse as we passed Gallows Moss, a generally guaranteed spot for this species. Buzzard and Red Kite were seen as we passed RAF Cranwell in Lincolnshire. Spurn - 14th October 2023

Shelduck (D Axford) Spurn 14 th October 2023 Weather : Sunny but cool. Driver : Glenn Thirty-nine members and friends set off from Stockport on our annual trip to Spurn. Whilst the weather patterns on the preceding couple of days had not been particularly favourable there was still the usual level of anticipation. The journey on the coach allowed us to tick off Stock Dove, Buzzard, Swallow, Reed Bunting, Golden Plover, Lapwing and Pink-footed Goose for our day’s list. We arrived at the first drop off point in Easington village and a number of us alighted the coach and had a wander down the adjacent Vicar’s Lane. Yellowhammer (J Wharton) The area was quiet with only Goldcrest, Pied Wagtail and Swallow noted. Dave R. picked up a Brambling. There were no birds in Easington churchyard and it was quiet as we walked on down Humberside Lane. Commoner birds were noted, Skylark, Buzzard, Chaffinch, Robin, Goldfinch and Woodpigeon.
